As the world in 2023 goes gung-ho over the Generative AI offerings, photo editing enthusiasts are not to be left behind either. Adobe threw its first gauntlet with the Firefly Generative AI engine infused into Photoshop (Beta). Just a few months back, photo editors were learning new skills on the editing software. All of a sudden, there are transformative changes in what one can do with a single instruction and minimal actions!
I have been experimenting with Photoshop generative AI for a couple of weeks now. It has been a mixed bag in my opinion. It produces some stunning effects effortlessly, while many times it confuses itself and produces ridiculous results. It will most likely undergo more data training and get better with time. But for now, it has been a reasonably good kick-off. Here are the top 5 experiments I attempted in Photoshop (Beta).
Experiment 1 – Generating a mirror reflection of a castle. You can see the result in the second picture. Furthermore, expanding the image and letting AI generate some completely new landscape around it to create a wider perspective. The interesting part is, you can keep iterating over the previous result to bring in larger perspectives!
Experiment 2 – That’s a click of the magnificent Amer fort in Rajasthan from 2022. Great vantage point; the only eye sore part was the parked vehicles. No problem!
Experiment 3 – Think of transforming the climate around! – “Add snow to the structures” The outcome could have been better with some post edits on top of it, but I didn’t bother much. The initial effect wasn’t bad either. It did a good job of identifying surfaces, though the actual snow looked like a big plastic.
Experiment 4 – This one I had clicked from my college museum in Tucson, Arizona. Gen AI did quite a good job on “Change the lamp lights to orange”, though the shape alternation was uncalled for!
Experiment 5 – Finally, another trial on removing some extra subjects from the frame. I shot this one in the wee hours at the popular Hussain Sagar Lake in Hyderabad. Such edits would come in handy in busy tourist places wherein getting a clear shot away from the crowd can get near to impossible!
The more we wrap our heads around this, it gets concerning from one perspective on how to verify the authenticity of any artifact. At the same time, I see endless possibilities to get creative with good intentions.
In my teens I was worried about being duped in the name of original shoes. Never imagined we will also have to figure out if the Photograph is fake or real.
This is super cool!
